1. What is SAP Plant Maintenance?
SAP Plant Maintenance module application in an organization does inspect the condition of the system, repairs and maintain the equipment, takes preventive maintenance and keep ideal conditions for the system. All the activities performed here are interconnected and therefore SAP PM is integrated with some of the other modules as well as Material Management, Production Planning, Sales and Distribution etc
2. What are the major responsibilities of SAP PM Consultant?
Here are the three key responsibilities of SAP PM Consultant
In order to check the actual condition of a technical system, inspection is done.
To make the technical system available for most the times, preventive Maintenance is done. It includes planning and scheduling of work activities for technical objects.
Repair helps in keeping the system in ideal condition always – at any of the planning stages like resource planning, work scheduling, initial costing, etc. and see there are no event damages. We can even create purchase requisition, and reduce downtown with processed work orders.
3. Explain Maintenance Plant in SAP PM
Maintenance plant is also known as the plant is one where the planning and maintenance tasks for the objects are done. Following activities could be performed in ‘Maintenance Plant’
- To define the Task list according to the maintenance plan
- Perform material planning as per BOM in the task list
- Managing and scheduling maintenance plans
- Creation and Execution of Maintenance orders
4. Explain Maintenance Planning and different types of Maintenance Planning
Based on the structure of the company – tasks and technical objects are defined under maintenance planning. Following are the three types of maintenance planning
- Centralized Maintenance Planning
- Decentralize Maintenance Planning
- Partially Centralize Maintenance Planning
5. Explain Breakdown Maintenance
In SAP PM, the presence of a maintenance team is required to correct in case malfunction of any equipment. The process of correcting the equipment or the situation is called Breakdown maintenance.
6. When do you perform Breakdown Maintenance?
Breakdown maintenance is performed in the following situations,
When the equipment is not working properly or there goes a breakdown in the technical equipment that affects the production.
7. What is Corrective Maintenance?
Corrective Maintenance contains all the preventive and regular maintenance steps. Following is the process involved in this.
- A user can enter a notification in SAP system to request maintenance and repair for any defective equipment.
- In this system, a maintenance planner can create, plan and schedule a maintenance work order.
- The work order is then received by a technician and information is entered.
- As per the order, an authorized person in PM system approves and completes the work.
8. Explain the difference between Corrective Maintenance and Preventive Maintenance
In preventive maintenance, in order to ensure the good condition of the systems, routine checks are performed as per the company’s maintenance strategy. A preventive work order is then created.
In Corrective Maintenance, we can correct a machine failure or any malfunction in the system by raising a notification and creating a work order. This work order is then sent to a technician. An authorized person then approves the order and completes it.
In some scenarios, a corrective work order is created because of the works of a preventive work order. During routine checkups, if a technician finds a malfunction or a failure of an operating machine, he generates a corrective work order to clear the fault.
9. Explain Planned Maintenance
A Planned Maintenance is one that defines the time intervals of different works and sequence in which they have to be executed. All the scheduled activities include inspection, maintenance and repairs come under this.
10. Can we change Equipment category once defined?
Yes, we can change. After entering into T-Code: IE02 section, in Edit menu we can change the category.
11. What is CATS? What is the use of it?
CATS – Cross Application Time Sheet component. It is used to record time and tasks in Plant Maintenance and gives an advantage for the employees to record their data thereby reducing the administrative workload.

13. How to configure a system to allow notification type change
You can define in SPRO the “Allowed change of notification type”. The following path should be followed to allow the change of notification type.

14. Explain the use of item number in a maintenance order
To identify material component to perform operations, we use item number in maintenance order. It is the first field in the components tab of maintenance order and is defined in the increasing orders of 0010.
15. Explain the use of the field “Standing order”
Instead of creating a new PM order every time, standing orders perform the present maintenance jobs and helps them settle at the end of every month. By using order hierarchies, we can attach sub-orders to the standing orders and settle them there to give a more precise recording of main costs at sub-orders level and we can monitor the budget at the standing order level.
16. Which order type is used for Preventive Maintenance?
For performing Preventive maintenance, we use the order type PM03.
17. Explain Refurbishment process
Refurbishment is a process of uninstalling and repairing the spare parts or damaged equipment from the maintenance plant and returning it to the warehouse or the equipment. In order to do this, we need material and a serial combination. We can define a refurbishment order as a maintenance order to collect the cost of the process. Once the process of refurbishment is completed, we change the conditional state of the equipment form damaged to refurbished state. Then the refurbished equipment is reinstalled in the plant and the order is closed.
18. What are the key steps performed in Refurbishment process?
Key Steps in the Refurbishment process −
- Uninstalling the damaged Equipment from the Maintenance Plant
- Using movement type 101 for moving material to a warehouse
- To collect cost for the refurbishment activity, creating refurbishment order
- After the execution of the refurbishment process, changing the state of the material from damaged to refurbished
- Reinstalling the equipment in the maintenance plant
19. Explain Milestone Confirmation
It is a special form of confirmation, where confirmation of one operation causes other operations or some sub-operations to be confirmed automatically at the same time. Here if one operation is confirmed, then the previous operations are confirmed automatically. Milestones have a corresponding indicator in the control key.
20. Explain multiple counter maintenance plan
A multiple counter maintenance plan is used for performance-based maintenance and is created without any maintenance strategy. In this, we can create different maintenance cycles, and with different dimensions, we allocate counters of equipment or functional locations.
We can use multiple counter maintenance plan individual or individual group of activities.
